Charles Bronson's eponymous biopic is released into the shops this week, although the man himself remains behind bars, 35 years after his stealing a princely £26.10 from a post office. This Nick Love-produced portrait of Britain's most impetuous and violent inmate attempts to shed some light on why Bronson (whose real name is Michael Peterson) remains locked away. The film has been derided by some as pointlessly gruesome and celebrated by others for its remorseless violence. One thing that everyone agrees on is that Tom Hardy (who spent time with his subject in preparation) is alarmingly persuasive in the role. A Clockwork Orange for the 21st Century this may not be, but you could do worse than spend an evening in with this deeply - and compellingly - mad man.

Released on 6 July. www.bronsonthemovie.com
